Buffer vs Hootsuite
The two incumbents of social media scheduling price the same job in opposite units. Buffer charges per channel — every account you connect adds a small, predictable amount. Hootsuite charges per user — every teammate adds a full suite seat. Neither is the 'expensive one' in the abstract: your shape (how many channels, how many people) decides which meter runs faster. This page works through both, on prices verified from their own sites in October 2026.
A note on method before the numbers: everything below comes from Buffer's and Hootsuite's own pricing and help pages, checked on October 22, 2026. Where a figure couldn't be verified on their pages — Hootsuite's monthly-billing rates, Buffer's volume pricing past ten channels — it is left out rather than estimated. This page is written to be useful as a standalone comparison of the two tools; the publisher's own product appears once, in a clearly labeled final section, and the comparison stands without it.
The short version: Buffer is a scheduling tool with an AI assistant, priced like a utility. Hootsuite is an operations suite — inbox, listening, benchmarking, reporting — priced like enterprise software. Most Buffer-vs-Hootsuite decisions are really a scope decision wearing a price tag: buy the queue, or buy the suite.
Prices and features checked against both companies’ own sites on October 22, 2026. Anything we could not verify on their pages is left out, not guessed.

Buffer: the queue, perfected and priced like a utility
Buffer's product is a queue and a visual calendar, executed with unusual calm. You connect channels, drop posts into each channel's queue, and Buffer publishes on the schedule you set. Around that core sit a genuinely capable set of supports: an AI Assistant for drafting and refining posts, a community inbox with AI-assisted replies, content ideas storage (100 on the free plan), and — on Team — approval workflows for organizations where a second pair of eyes is policy. An API is available on all plans, which matters more than it sounds: Buffer composes well with whatever else a small team already runs.
The pricing model is the philosophy made visible. Essentials is $6 per channel per month ($5 on annual billing); Team is $12 ($10 annual). A channel is one social account, so costs scale with how much you publish to, not with how many people help. A solo operator with four channels pays $24 a month on Essentials and gets the whole tool. The free plan is real, too — 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, basic insights with 30 days of history — not a trial dressed as a tier.
Buffer's limits are the flip side of its focus. The analytics are 'basic insights' in its own framing at the lower end — per-post performance and channel overviews rather than deep reporting. There is no listening layer, no competitor benchmarking suite, and no automation beyond the queue: Buffer publishes what you wrote, when you said. For a great many teams, that is precisely the job. The mistake is buying Buffer expecting a suite, or dismissing it for not being one.
Hootsuite: the suite, with everything that implies
Hootsuite is an operations platform for social teams: multiple streams and a unified inbox with automation for engagement management, social listening, benchmarking against competitors, and custom reporting, with its Wisdom AI woven through every plan. Where Buffer answers 'are we posting?', Hootsuite also answers 'what is being said about us, what are rivals doing, and what did last quarter look like?' — the questions that appear once social becomes a department rather than a task.
The pricing matches the ambition and the audience. Per its FAQ, plans are billed per user and annually: Standard is $99 per user per month for up to 10 social accounts; Professional is $199 with unlimited accounts; Advanced is $399, also unlimited, with Enterprise custom above it. There is no free plan; a 14-day trial (no card) is the on-ramp. Read the unit carefully: a three-person team on Standard pays $297 a month before anyone has posted anything, because the meter is people, not channels.
That math is neither a flaw nor a trick — it is a positioning statement. If your team genuinely works in the inbox daily, runs listening queries, benchmarks rivals and reports to leadership, the per-seat price buys a per-seat workplace. If your team is one person and a queue, the suite's price buys a great deal of unopened software. Hootsuite's risk has never been quality; it is fit.
What it actually costs: four shapes
| Shape | Buffer | Hootsuite |
|---|---|---|
| Solo operator, 3 social accounts | Essentials: 3 channels × $6 = $18/mo ($15/mo billed annually) | Standard: 1 user × $99 = $99/mo, billed annually |
| Solo operator, 10 social accounts | Essentials: 10 channels × $6 = $60/mo ($50/mo billed annually) | Standard: $99/mo — the 10-account cap is exactly met |
| Team of 3, 10 social accounts | Team: 10 channels × $12 = $120/mo ($100/mo billed annually) | Standard: 3 users × $99 = $297/mo, billed annually |
| Just starting out, 3 social accounts | Free plan: $0 — 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel included | Standard: $99/mo, billed annually — there is no free tier to start on |
Choose Buffer if your workload is publishing: a queue across your channels, posts written by your team, light AI assistance, basic performance insight — at a price that scales with channels and stays in utility territory at almost any small-team shape. Its free plan and $6 Essentials tier make it the lowest-risk start in mainstream scheduling, and the per-channel model means adding a teammate costs nothing.
Choose Hootsuite if your workload is operations: a team living in a unified inbox, listening and benchmarking as standing practices, reporting that leadership reads. At that scope the per-seat price is defensible and the suite's depth is real. The failure mode to avoid is buying Hootsuite for Buffer's job — paying suite prices for a queue — which is the single most common outcome of this comparison done carelessly.
And run your own shape through the scenario table before deciding. The crossover is mechanical: channels are cheaper than seats until the channel count grows large and the team stays small, at which point Hootsuite's account-unlimited tiers (Professional and up) start to close the gap. Your numbers, not either vendor's headline, should make this call.
If you mainly post to X: the third option
This page is published by OttoSocial, and honesty about scope is the house rule — so, plainly: OttoSocial is not a Buffer or Hootsuite replacement for multi-network operations. It does one platform, X, and goes deep instead of broad: an autopilot that generates posts in your brand voice and publishes them unattended, unlimited AI generation, native threads and polls, and (on Creator) an opt-in engagement engine. Pro is $24/mo, Creator $39/mo, and Business $99/mo with 5 workspaces included; a free plan covers a lighter manual rhythm.
If X is a side channel in a multi-network operation, the comparison above is your answer and this section is a footnote. If X is the main channel and the workload is the daily writing-and-posting shift itself, the third option is priced and built for exactly that narrower job.
Frequently asked questions
Is Buffer cheaper than Hootsuite?
For most small shapes, yes — often by a lot. A solo operator with 3 accounts pays $18/mo on Buffer Essentials versus $99/mo for Hootsuite Standard; a 3-person team with 10 accounts pays $120/mo on Buffer Team versus $297/mo on Hootsuite Standard. Hootsuite's account-unlimited tiers (Professional at $199/user, Advanced at $399/user) change the shape of the comparison only at larger scales — and its price becomes defensible when the suite features (inbox, listening, reporting) are worth money to you, which is a scope decision, not a pricing error.
Does Hootsuite have a free plan?
No. Hootsuite offers a 14-day free trial (no card required) and paid plans from Standard at $99 per user per month, billed annually. Buffer has a genuine free plan: 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, 1 user and basic insights.
Does Buffer have an agency plan?
No — Buffer's published lineup is Free, Essentials and Team; there is no tier above Team in its current pricing. Agencies typically run Buffer on Team ($12 per channel/month) and scale by channels. Hootsuite's agency-shaped answer is its Advanced tier ($399 per user/month) and custom Enterprise.
Which is better for a small team, Buffer or Hootsuite?
For a small team whose job is publishing, Buffer: per-channel pricing means teammates don't multiply the bill, and Team ($12/channel/mo) adds approval workflows. Hootsuite fits a small team only when that team genuinely uses suite capabilities — unified inbox work, listening, benchmarking — every week. Buy the workload you have, not the one a vendor's tier names evoke.
Do Buffer and Hootsuite both support X (Twitter)?
Yes — X is fully supported by Buffer and supported by Hootsuite, including scheduling. Neither tool writes and publishes X content autonomously in your voice; both publish what your team composes. (Fully autonomous X posting is the narrower third option described at the end of this page.)
